About the book
Icho Mumhanzi! includes a variety of songs and games collected from all over Zimbabwe. They have been carefully researched and noted here for educational and choral use. The book is suitable for all ages, including children’s games, songs about animals and some more advanced and mature tunes. Every song is clearly written in lead sheet format, showing call and response lines, percussion rhythms and information about the song. Translations and pronunciation guides are provided along with interpretations and background for each song. Including five choral arrangements for SAT/B choir with accompaniments, this book was created with a purpose to make fun and enjoyable music from an another part of our diverse world. Music from around the world should be celebrated and it is hoped that a book like this will make the process of approaching and teaching world music more accessible for music teachers.
About the Author
Billy St John is currently studying Music Education at the University of Adelaide. He spent 13 years teaching music in Zimbabwe where he was the Director of Music at The Peterhouse Group of Schools, Chairman of the National Musicamp Association of Zimbabwe and a keen and active performer and supporter of the local music scene. Billy’s love for Zimbabwean music, combined with his new path in music education research, has inspired the creation of this resource in an effort to share and enjoy the music of Zimbabwe.
